Welcome to AIX Consulting

I've noticed that often people have trouble getting open source software compiled correctly for AIX. A good example of this is the gcc as provided by some other AIX tools sites. Often they do not provide libgcc_s so it is not possible to link using shared libraries which is what all the other open source software wants to do. Why this is I don't really know. My second complaint is that these sites provide RPMs instead of installp images. As far as I know, RPMs do not have the features that installp images do. My third complaint is they are compiled for /opt making it hard to get a few packages from these sites and then build on top of them.

I plan to start slowly uploading installp images. To start with, I plan to upload some fundamental packages like libintl, gettext, expat, and gcc. After that I will add mostly programming tools like gawk and GNU's sed. Then I plan to add Apache, Ruby, Passenger, and Postgres. My initial tilt here is the tools needed for a web site. (No... this site is not running on AIX. It is hosted and the hosts seem to be Linux machines. The bandwidth coming to my home office is too small to host this site.)

My initial list of downloads is here: downloads

I have added links to Discus so feedback may be left. I'm especially interested in hearing of requests for various pieces of software that are not yet on this site.

I hope you find the site useful.

Thank you,
Perry Smith
